Fringe finale - Peter’s paradox. (sit down, grab a cup of coffee, and focus)

I am not a physicist, I just like to read stuff and interpret it. Also, I would LOVE to discuss about this with you - the reply tool and the ask box were made for that.

Peter might have been 47 at the most, but he is definitely stuck into the Grandfather’s paradox. If you’re not familiar with it, I’d advise you go read some Barjavel or rewatch some Quantum Leap (or the JJA’s Star Trek).

To put it simply, what if a man traveled back into time and killed his grandfather before he had children - meaning before the man’s father was born ? The man could not exist, but then here he is, killing his grandfather.

Several theories try to explain it, some of them talking about…parallel universes ! Because the man changed the past, he created another universe, different than the one he is from. Another fork in the road.

This is where it gets interesting. One of the theories is that the man actually travels to a parallel universe where he was never born, and kills his grandfather, which explains why he was never born in that universe, and why he can still exist at the same time - because he is from another universe. He thus creates a bond between the two universes. One universe cannot exist without this bond to the other.

In Fringe, Peter comes back from the future to change the mistake he’s done in the past, i.e. destroying the RedVerse. He changes the past and does not destroy the RedVerse. He creates a bond between the Red and the BlueVerse (I don’t know if he willingly created it, or if it would have existed anyway). Also, because he made another decision, he created another fork in the road - creating another universe. Our characters are now in this new universe - and some alternate characters are there as well because Peter used the newly formed bond to make them cross over. The ‘old’ BlueVerse is the one in which Peter initially destroyed the RedVerse. It will goes on existing, but I’m not sure we’ll see any of it in the 4th season of Fringe.

Are you confused enough ? I made a little something for you, I hope it will clear things up.

I believe the situation #3 is the one our characters are currently in. And Peter might be stuck in between the RedVerse and the 'new’ BlueVerse. Or back in the 'old’ BlueVerse. I don’t know, he could be some other place for all we know. The problem is, this is another timeline, and the future might be worse than what Peter saw - because he saw the future of the 'old’ BlueVerse, not the future of the 'new’ BlueVerse. And using the Machine to try to have the perfect ending will create each time another universe, adding the possibilities of wars between universes, creating more imbalance than before.

So, what do you think ? I’m really encouraging you to talk, here. It took me some time to build this post…
